What Causes An Ankle Sprain?

Ankle sprains are unfortunately very common, and not just in the world of sports. Yes, they can happen from playing basketball or football, but they can also happen from walking on uneven surfaces. Dr. Andrew has the skills to treat not only the sprained ankle but the person attached to that ankle. Every sprained ankle isn't the same and shouldn't be treated the same!

Diagnosis of an ankle sprain is done with orthopedic tests and the severity is graded on a 3-part scale. The grades include:

  • Grade 1- Slight stretching and damage of the fibers of the ligaments.

  • Grade 2- Slight tearing of the ligament and a sense of joint looseness when the ankle is examined

  • Grade 3- Complete tearing of the ligaments and a large amount of joint instability when the ankle is examined

How Can Chiropractic Care Help An Ankle Sprain?

Chiropractic care is helpful when dealing with ankle sprains because they are one of the hardest injuries to rehab quickly. The hardest part of rehabbing a sprained ankle is that you have a 12%-47% chance of having another one. This means we not only have to rehab from the original sprain but prehab to prevent another one from happening. With the use of chiropractic adjustment, manual muscle therapy, and corrective exercise, Dr. Andrew will educate you on how to keep your ankles healthy by strengthening the surrounding tissues so you can keep doing your activities!

What To Expect For Treatment?

  • Extremity Adjustment to the ankle joint after proper examination
  • Dynamic/Kinesiology tape to help decrease inflammation and swelling, along with adding stability
  • Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM) to the ligaments
  • Manual Muscle Therapy to the surrounding muscles
  • Corrective exercises with at-home strategies to decrease pain
