What Causes A Concussion?

Concussions have been a hot topic in recent years, especially in the world of sports. In 2022, they made national news because of  NFL player Tua Tagovailoa, who had a horrible concussion injury that forced him to miss the rest of the season. Unfortunately, concussions don't only happen in sports. Anyone can get a concussion, most commonly from a sudden stop at a high speed like a car accident or a fall to the ground.

According to the Mayo Clinic, "A concussion is a traumatic brain injury that affects your brain function". It is usually caused by a blow to the head or severe shaking of the head and upper body. Concussion symptoms can linger for a long period of time and can have ties to muscle dysfunction in the neck and shoulder areas. This was brought to light in 2012 when Sidney Crosby was continuing to have concussion-like symptoms after his concussion was medically cleared.

How Can Chiropractic Care Help Concussions?

The best way to begin treatment of a concussion is by diagnosing the severity. Dr. Andrew Kinach has special training to be able to diagnose patients to see if a concussion is present and what severity it is. If a concussion is severe, a referral to a neurologist may be warranted to have the brain assessed by an expert before chiropractic care can begin. If the concussion is not severe, treatment will begin with light soft tissue work with a focus on increasing the range of motion within the patient's tolerance.

If you are an athlete, getting a Baseline Concussion Screening Test before your season begins is vitally important to your treatment. It allows us to quickly understand how severe your concussion is by comparing you to your baseline and protects you from returning to the game too early. If you are interested in learning more about this for you or your athlete, please contact us today!

What To Expect For Treatment?

  • Rest, Reduce screen time
  • Chiropractic Manipulative Therapy to the neck and upper back
  • Manual Muscle Therapy to the neck and shoulder muscles
  • Return To Play protocol, which includes corrective exercises, cardio-based exercises, and sport-specific exercises before being cleared to play.
