What Causes Frozen Shoulder?
Also known as adhesive capsulitis, a frozen shoulder is when the shoulder joint begins to get very stiff and painful. This is a very gradual increase in stiffness and pain, and is very treatable! There is nothing structurally wrong with the shoulder joint in a truly frozen shoulder. The muscles and ligaments in the shoulder complex begin to stiffen up when a decreased motion of the shoulder is present.
There a 3 stages of a Frozen Shoulder that come on slowly.
Freezing stage- Any movement of the shoulder causes pain and there is a limited range of motion noticed. This lasts roughly 2-9 months
Frozen stage- You notice a decrease in pain but an increase in the limited range of motion of the shoulder, making it difficult to use that arm. This lasts roughly 4-12 months
Thawing stage- There is an increase in the range of motion and possibly an increase in pain as well. This lasts roughly 5-24 months.
