What Causes a Hamstring Strain?
Your hamstrings are found on the back of your legs. You often hear people say they have tight hamstrings or that they are unable to touch their toes. Tight hamstrings are actually very common, but they aren't supposed to cause pain. When the hamstrings become painful, that's when it's important to get it checked out!
There are really two types of hamstring injuries, a strain or tendinitis. A strain is when the muscle is "pulled" and causes that campy feeling. Tendinitis happens over a longer period of time due to overuse of one of the muscle groups because of imbalances or asymmetries.
How Can Chiropractic Care Help Hamstring Strains?
Chiropractic care is helpful when dealing with a hamstring strain. The first thing to do is to diagnose and assess the severity of the hamstring strain before beginning any treatment. There are 3 levels of severity for a hamstring strain, Grade 1 - Mild pull to the muscle, Grade 2 - A partial muscle tear, and Grade 3 - A complete muscle tear. Recovery and treatment times vary from a few days with a grade 1 to a few months with a grade 2 or 3. Proper treatment can reduce the recovery time and pain levels.
What To Expect For Treatment?
-
Chiropractic adjustments to the low back, hip, knee, or ankle if needed
-
Manual Muscle Therapy to the hamstring muscles
-
Corrective exercises focused on increasing hamstring strength, correcting poor gait, and proper hip motion
