What Causes A Herniated Disc?
Discs are comprised of a thick fibrous cartilage around the outside and a soft "jelly-like" cartilage on the inside. They act as a cushion between each vertebra in your spine. As we age, the wear and tear on the discs, along with dehydration, cause them to become more stiff.
A herniated disc occurs when the wear and tear become so great that the jelly-like center called the nucleus pulposus begins to creep out to the edges of the disc. This causes the disc to push out onto the nerve roots that are leaving the spinal cord. This compression of the nerve roots causes increased inflammation in the area of the disc bulge or herniation and sometimes radiating pain that can go down the leg or arm.
How Can Chiropractic Care Help Herniated Discs?
Chiropractic care can be very helpful with disc herniations. The most common area of disc herniations is in the neck or lower back. Dr. Andrew Kinach in Excelsior has extensive knowledge of how to comfortably treat herniations and radiating pain. Many people have a disc bulge or herniation that has no pain associated with it. When one causes pain, it can be debilitating, and that's when we are here to help! Research has suggested that patients have a trial period of 6 weeks of conservative care (like chiropractic) before considering other treatment options like surgery. We at Kinach Chiropractic work with you to get you out of pain, and teach you how to move to prevent it from coming back again!
