What Causes IT Band Syndrome?
The IT (Iliotibial) band is a thick fibrous band of tissue that is found on the outside of the thigh. It runs in a straight line from your hip to just below the knee. When this structure gets over-stressed it can start to cause hip or knee pain with walking, running, or standing.
Irritation of the IT Band is generated from bending the knee. Each time we bend the knee, the IT band can rub over the thigh bone causing inflammation. When the IT band becomes inflamed, it doesn't glide as easily and movement can become painful. It is a very common injury in runners, as much as 14% of runners suffer from IT band Syndrome. It is usually only found on one side but can affect both sides as well.
How Can Chiropractic Care Help IT Band Pain?
Chiropractic care is helpful when dealing with IT Band Syndrome. Chiropractic care can be beneficial to treat IT Band pain because it is closely related to how the pelvis and surrounding musculature function as a whole. The reason pain becomes present is due to compensation in the hip and pelvis over a long period of time. As we continue with our activities, we overuse certain muscles because of the compensations that lead us to pain.
What To Expect For Treatment?
-
Chiropractic adjustments to the lower back, pelvis, and hip joints
-
Manual Muscle Therapy to surrounding musculature
-
Corrective exercises to reduce compensations and improve walking patterns
