What Causes Thoracic Outlet Syndrome?

TOS is where blood vessels and nerves get compressed between your collarbone and the first rib. When this occurs, patients can feel symptoms of shoulder and neck pain to numbness and tingliness down the arm and into the hand. This is because the nerves of the brachial plexus, which control the shoulder, arm, and hand muscles, are compressed. When the blood vessels are compressed, some symptoms noticed are discoloration of the hand, arm fatigue with activity, throbbing felt near the collarbone, cold fingers, and a potentially weak pulse.

Some common causes of thoracic outlet syndrome are:

  • Physical Trauma (like after a car accident)

  • Repetitive injuries from work

  • Sports-related injuries

  • Anatomical Defects such as a cervical rib

How Can Chiropractic Care Help Thoracic Outlet Syndrome?

Chiropractic care can help TOS by focusing treatment efforts on the tight muscles causing compression. Along with muscle tightness, nerve tension could be a factor that is treated separately along with the muscle tightness. Postural changes are important to help maintain lasting relief and specific corrective exercises are used to help with that!

What To Expect For Treatment?

  • Chiropractic Adjustments to the neck, upper back, and shoulder areas
  • Manual Muscle Therapy to the shoulder muscles to aid in relaxation.
  • Corrective Exercises to regain proper shoulder and neck mobility
